A beautiful hand-painted Russian lacquer miniature box from the village of Kholuy, one of the four historic Russian lacquer villages: Palekh, Kholuy, Mstera, Fedoskino.
Hand-painted lacquer miniatures from the village of Kholuy are among the most respected forms of Russian folk art, traditionally created using layered lacquer over papier-mâché and detailed tempera painting with gold highlights.
This elegant box features a graceful golden deer (“Лань” / Lan – meaning Doe or Deer) walking through a stylized forest landscape. The delicate composition is painted in fine detail with gold highlights, soft greens, and pastel floral accents against a deep black lacquer background.
The painting style is characteristic of the Kholuy school, known for its naturalistic compositions and woodland themes. The scene is framed with a traditional hand-painted gold scroll border.
Along the lower edge of the painting are the original inscriptions:
• “Лань” (Lan / Doe) – title of the scene
• “в. Холуй” – Village of Kholuy, Russia
• “исп. Четвеников” (or a very close spelling) – executed by Chetvenikov / Chetvennikov, which is the artist's signature, hand-painted in gold
The interior is finished in classic vermilion red lacquer, a hallmark of authentic Russian lacquer boxes.
Pieces like this were produced by artists working in lacquer cooperatives during the late Soviet period, making them both decorative and collectible examples of Russian folk art.
This box works beautifully as a jewelry box, keepsake holder, or display piece.

Why collectors love Kholuy lacquer
Kholuy is one of the four historic Russian lacquer villages (along with Palekh, Mstera, and Fedoskino). Artists there specialized in finely detailed miniature painting using traditional egg-tempera techniques layered beneath glossy lacquer.
Nature scenes like this deer composition are particularly sought after for their elegant simplicity and timeless folk aesthetic. Signed examples are more desirable than unsigned production pieces.
